THIS COLLECTION OF ONE OF A KIND PIECES WAS INSPIRED BY MY RESIDENCY THROUGH THE PRATT INSTITUTE AT THE SIENA ART INSTITUTE
The pieces will be on view on April 15th from 6- 8pm at LRC 140-142 2nd ave suite 306.
My residency in Siena began with a simple intention: to slow down—to think, breathe, and allow space for reflection. I arrived knowing only that I wanted to work with crochet lace, but without a clear destination. I began by experimenting with different fibers and yarn weights, working exclusively in white as a way to clear my mind and focus on process.
While at the Siena Art Institute, I spent time walking through the gardens, observing their permaculture practices, picking flowers, and watching them slowly evolve as I crocheted. Through this quiet rhythm, I began relearning and experimenting with Irish crochet lace—a technique historically practiced by women as both creative expression and economic survival.
In my work, I intentionally disrupted and “broke” this traditional lace structure. After returning from Siena, I expanded the pieces with color in silk and mohair and began recombining the fragmented floral forms. The work in this collection brings together those broken lace flowers with locally dyed deadstock silk and recycled fabrics, creating one-of-a-kind textile compositions that explore fragility, labor, and renewal.
